There is good news for fans of safe shopping online for clothes. American fashion giant Gap is all set to open up its first online store in the UK. The retailer will have a distribution base located in the UK, selling Gap clothing along with items from luxury brand Banana Republic. The distribution base will serve not only the UK, but also nine other countries in Western Europe.

Previously, the US fashion retailer has dipped its toes into the safe shopping online water by selling its goods through Asos, the online fashion store. Asos began to offer Gap goods, including men's, women's and babywear, back in August of last year, initially offering items from the brand's Autumn 09 collection. Prior to this, Gap was a brand associated with online shopping solely in the US, despite having a fair few retail stores on high streets and in shopping centres around the UK.

It seems as though the move to UK-based e-retail came about as a result of some good financial tidings for Gap. The brand's management recently announced a strong positioning at the end of 2009, whilst last year Gap announced that sales had gone up 104% in the 12 months leading up to March 2009.

Gap actually opened its first UK store in 1987 and has since gone on to open some 170 stores in Europe, whilst it owns more than 3,000 outlets worldwide. Presumably the Gap UK eCommerce store will eventually offer the same level of choice as that provided by its US counterpart, which sells Gap maternity, nursery and kids' wear in addition to the usual ranges, along with Gap-owned brands such as Old Navy, active wear label Piperlime and shoe store Athleta. Also worth looking out for will be Gap deals and Gap discount codes.
